Second Life is a 3D online world with a rapidly growing population from more than 100 countries around the globe. During the past year, Linden Lab (operators of Second Life) released the source code of the Second Life viewer, as well as some key pieces of Python-based network infrastructure (eventlet and mulib). The Second Life Grid Architecture Working Group is conceiving open protocols for interoperability with Second Life, and an active community has brought the technology not only to Linux, but to mobile devices and the web. Rob Lanphier will unearth many of the geeky details of how this world is all stitched together, as well as goofing off in gratuitous 3D glory. |
