BLUG meeting Thurs June 6th, at BTC

Thursday, June 6th, at BTC, IN ROOM – CC201, from 6:30pm til 9pm, BLUG will have it’s regular public meeting.
Meeting includes:
“Hands-on Help Time” from 6:30pm til 7pm, Linux News, Q&A, and a presentation by Brian Lawler on Amateur (Ham) Radio.
“Hands-on Help Time”:
Starting at 6:30pm, 1/2 hour prior to the regular 7pm start time, BLUG offers hands-on help for anyone with a Linux issue. Bring your computer and let the BLUG folks give you a hand.
Presentation:
Brian’s talk will include some “show and tell” items such as hand-held radios including a unit that Amazon sells for $39 and explain how they are different (better) than FRS.
He’ll also talk about how ham radio is a good intro to electronics
which can inspire software hackers to become hardware hackers.
Show some WRT-54G routers that he converted to mesh networking for amateur radio. Tell about the current “state of the art” in slow digital data transfer over long distances using free Linux based software (NBEMS) and show a digital radio that links over local repeaters to anywhere in the world via a CentOS server that he maintains (DSTAR).
He’ll also get in to some of the basic requirements for the entry level radio license (Technician) and give some tricks to remembering the material.

Thursday, May 9th, is the regular monthly meeting of BLUG’s DotOrg Committee.
All those interested in participating in BLUG business and LFNW planning are encouraged to attend.
LFNW 2013 was a success and we’ll be discussing what worked, what didn’t and how we can make it even better next year, our 15th anniversary.
We’ll meet from 7pm until 9pm in the library of RE Sources which is located above the RE Store on 2309 Meridian Street, Bellingham (access is from the alley via stairs in back).

“Drupal Commons allows anyone to build a powerful community or intranet site with all the power and flexibility of Drupal, and all the social and collaborative tools of Ning, SharePoint, or Google Groups. He will demonstrate some of the most popular built-in features of Drupal Commons as well as some unique customizations and configurations that serve specific communities and organizational needs. Then we will look into the future of Drupal Commons (a free distro, maintained by Acquia), which was just released for Drupal 7.”

will feature a LAMP security presentation by Scott, and Christina who are both members of the WCC (Whatcom Community College) team that will be competing at CCDC (Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition) in March.

Presentation:
Presenters will review the first steps in securing a LAMP server and discuss the importance of monitoring systems afterwards. They will show the recommended steps for securing Linux, Apache, MySQL, and as well as PHPmyadmin. Additionally, they will do a live demonstration on both security and the danger of not securing a system. There will also be a Q&A period covering the importance of security in a server environment.

Thursday, Feb 7th, at BTC, IN ROOM – CC201,from 6:30pm til 9pm, BLUG will have it’s regular public meeting.
Meeting includes:
“Hands-on Help Time” from 6:30pm til 7pm, Linux News, Q&A, and in response to a recent thread on the Bellingham Linux User Group mailing list, this meeting will feature a discussion on system virtualization, led by Bob Potter.
“Hands-on Help Time”:
Starting at 6:30pm, 1/2 hour prior to the regular 7pm start time,BLUG offers hands-on help for anyone with a Linux issue.Bring your computer and let the BLUG folks give you a hand.
Presentation:
This will be a user group participation event, with input solicited from the group. Discussion will center around VirtualBox, with excursions into other virtualization technologies such as VMware, Xen, and KVM and qemu
as time permits. We intend to show installation of VirtualBox on the host system, and installation of a guest system. We will also import guest systems created on other host systems. Problem installations will be demonstrated, and suggestions for solutions will be solicited. Please bring your questions and experience for an interesting and informative virtualization experience.
